Monsopiad Cultural Village

Duration: 3 Hours (0900-1200) or (1400-1700)

Monsopiad Cultural Village is 20 minutes from Kota Kinabalu. The village was built to commemorate the legendary KadazanDusun warrior and who was a headhunter named "Monsopiad". The legendary warrior Monsopiad who once lived in the village of Kuai in Penampang, is known to have collected 42 heads. His 7th generations have kept the collections of the 42 skulls covered with hisad leaves in the "House of Skulls" at the Monsopiad Cultural Village. The believe was that the spirits of the skulls requested Monsopiad and his generations to honored and take care of them, in return the spirits will protect the family member from unseen harm. Historical items are on display at the village, which includes some interesting items such as traditional costumes, apparels, traditional tools for burial ceremonies and handcraft.


Itinerary
From your hotel, we will drive for 20 minutes to the Monsopiad Cultural Village. You will be greeted with a welcome drink followed by a visit to the various traditional farmhouses. The farmhouses depict the lifestyle of the KadazanDusuns and there are display of traditional tools and basket, weaving equipments, and musical instruments in these houses. At the "House of Skulls", there are 42 skulls collected by the headhunter warrior Monsopiad. These are skulls of the enemies hunted by Monsopiad many centuries ago. The house unveiled the spiritual belief and culture of the KadazanDusuns. Finally, a cultural dance performance is the finale of this cultural exchange.

  1. When entering the house of skulls, visitors are requested:-
    - to remove their footwear and to leave them outside
    - NOT to make disrespectful gestures, remarks, laugh, shout, etc
  2. In all the houses, including the restaurant, always tread lightly
  3. It is disrespectful to walk over a person or any objects
  4. Do not touch, make a disrespectful remarks or gestures to the following:
    - Siou do Mohoing (the Skulls)
    - Bobohizan Sigar (Headgear), paraphernalia of instruments.
    - Offerings
    - the Keeper"s Sword
  5. Do NOT intrude the Bobohizan, any rituals and ceremonies in progress
